REMSEN, NY — March 21st — Together with a number of other agencies, members of the Remsen Fire Department took part in an ice water rescue training exercise. The training was attended by officers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as well as firefighters from the Barneveld Fire Department, Holland Patent Hose Company, and Newport Fire Co. #4. Self-rescue, one-person rescues, and the transfer of two victims from chilly water were among the scenarios that crews performed.

In upstate New York, where frozen lakes and ponds may create dangerous situations, ice rescue training is a standard component of winter preparation. Firefighters are trained to use specialized equipment while ensuring victim access and rescuer safety. Joint drills, according to officials, boost departmental collaboration and the region's preparedness for cold water situations.
