March 24, 2026 — Members of Bethel Fire & EMS conducted an intensive training drill on March 23 at Fire Headquarters on South Street, focusing on the critical and high-risk “Firefighter Down” scenario. During the exercise, firefighters operating in full turnout gear and air packs simulated advancing a hose line into a structure fire before initiating a mayday situation involving a downed firefighter. EMS personnel then took over, practicing the rapid removal of protective gear and air packs, followed by life-saving measures including CPR and assisted breathing prior to simulated transport. The scenario was repeated multiple times under the supervision of Bethel’s state-certified instructors, ensuring both firefighters and EMS providers gained valuable hands-on experience in coordinated rescue efforts. Officials emphasized that this type of training is essential to maintaining readiness for real-world emergencies where rescuing one of their own becomes the priority.
