Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Appling County and Surrounding Areas
March 12, 2026 — The Appling County Emergency Management Agency reported that the National Weather Service in Jacksonville issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Appling County and multiple surrounding counties across southeastern Georgia, effective until 9:15 AM EDT. At approximately 8:24 AM, a line of severe storms was identified stretching from near Graham to south of Nicholls, moving east at speeds of up to 60 mph. The primary hazard associated with the storm included damaging wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph, with the potential to cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Impacted areas included Baxley, Hazlehurst, Alma, Graham, Surrency, Plant Hatch, Nicholls, Screven, Odum, and Bristol. Officials also warned residents to remain alert for the possibility of tornado development, as conditions associated with severe thunderstorms can rapidly intensify. A Tornado Watch remained in effect for the region until 1:00 PM EDT. Residents were urged to seek shelter in an interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy structure and to stay informed as conditions evolved.
