March 16, 2026 — The Gilmanton Firefighters Association recognized Fire Chief Hempel as part of its weekly “Member Monday” spotlight, honoring his decades of service, leadership, and deep-rooted connection to the Gilmanton community. Chief Hempel, who joined the department as a junior member in 1978 at the age of 16, has dedicated his life to the fire service, following in the footsteps of his father who also served as a captain. A longtime resident since childhood, Hempel has spent more than four decades serving the town, building strong ties both within the department and throughout the community. He credits his passion for the job to the sense of brotherhood and the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives during their most difficult moments. Outside of his duties, Hempel enjoys outdoor activities including running, hiking, skiing, and golf, as well as spending time with his wife of 43 years, their children, and granddaughter. Known for his leadership, steady presence, and commitment to service, Hempel emphasized that his favorite part of the job remains the people—both the members of the department and the residents they serve. Department officials praised his enduring dedication and leadership as a cornerstone of the organization.
