March 12, 2026 — The Bellingham Fire Department recently shared a historic photo capturing a moment from March 1971, featuring Chief Jack Baker during the construction of Station 5 on Northwest Avenue.

The image shows Chief Baker standing in front of the station as it was being built, marking a significant time in the department’s history. Station 5 officially opened shortly after on May 10, 1971, and remains in service today—nearly 55 years later—housing a three-person crew, the city’s ladder truck, and an ambulance.

Also featured in the photo is a 1969 Chevrolet Brookwood command vehicle, which served as a chief’s vehicle during that era.

The department even posed a fun question to the community, wondering whether the vehicle was painted in traditional fire engine red.

Historic photos like this help preserve the legacy of the department and highlight the long-standing dedication of its members and leadership.
