Rochester, NY — February 25th — The last ice rescue exercise of the winter season was finished by Rochester Fire Department personnel attached to Engine 17, Engine 19, and Truck 6. During the training, firemen were put in controlled situations meant to mimic victim-related crises on frozen rivers. While working in freezing weather, crews rehearsed rope operations, victim access, and coordinated team movement.

Every winter, ice rescue training is held to make sure firemen are ready for situations involving frozen rivers, ponds, and coastal regions. The National Fire Protection Association states that safe operations during cold-water and ice incidents require specialized equipment and frequent training. Repeated drills, according to department officials, improve teamwork and keep the Rochester region prepared for water rescue situations.
