Advanced Ice Rescue Training Hosted by Western Fire Department

WESTERN, N.Y. — February 23rd — Over the weekend, the Volunteer Fire Company of Western held the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control Ice/Cold Water Rescue Technician Training Course. The 16-hour technician-level curriculum covered advanced ice rescue skills such as self-rescue, shore-based rescue procedures, and go-ice rescue operations. Participants also talked about the effects of cold water on victims, offshore rescue techniques, and the employment of specialist ice rescue equipment. The hands-on session included prolonged time on the ice and several scenario-based rescue exercises.


The training was completed successfully by five department members: Michael Anania Jr., Pazia Grocholski, Peter Grocholski III, Stephanie Grocholski, and Bella Venettozzi. Department officials congratulated the members for devoting their weekend to boosting rescue capabilities and increasing preparedness for cold water crises.
