Camper Fire Extinguished in Mastic; One Person Hospitalized

MASTIC, N.Y. — A camper fire in Mastic was quickly brought under control Monday evening, April 6, with one person transported to a local hospital for evaluation, authorities said.



The incident occurred at about 5:19 p.m. on Mastic Road near Good Friends, where dispatchers received a report of a vehicle fire involving a camper or recreational vehicle.

Assistant Chief Rudy Sunderman was first to arrive, followed shortly by Chief Steve Januszkiewicz, who assumed command at the scene.

The first-due engine crew stretched a hose line and began attacking the fire, approaching the RV as additional units arrived to assist. Firefighters from Engine 5-12-4 and Rescue 5-12-10 helped contain the blaze, which was quickly extinguished.

Emergency medical personnel from Mastic responded with multiple ambulances, along with Shirley Ambulance. One individual was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. No other injuries were reported.

The fire was placed under control within about an hour. Suffolk police and Mastic fire personnel remained on scene to direct traffic during the response. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
