Richmond, MA - FF/EMT Bart led a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) training session using materials available on the station, which he creatively turned into props. The setup included a combination of simple yet challenging scenarios designed to sharpen essential skills, such as wall breaches, confined space entry, and navigating narrow corridors.
During the exercises, members donned their SCBA gear and maneuvered through the props, practicing tasks like passing through residential walls, wiggling through small openings, and squeezing through tight spaces—simulating the conditions they might face during search and rescue operations or hose deployments. The bulky air bottles added to the challenge, highlighting the importance of practicing these maneuvers in a controlled training environment.
The training emphasized that techniques can vary for each firefighter based on size and maneuverability, mirroring the unpredictable nature of real-world emergencies. Practicing in training ensures members are prepared before encountering similar challenges on the job.
The session was briefly interrupted by an emergency call for a fire alarm activation. All six crew members responded promptly, deploying multiple apparatus. The call was ultimately a false alarm, allowing the crew to return to their training.
The department expressed gratitude to the crew for their dedication, particularly recognizing FF/EMT Bart for taking the initiative to build the props and lead the training session.
