Five-Alarm Fire Injures Two Residents and Two Firefighters in Monson




On May 19th at 16:38 Monson Fire and Police were dispatched by Westcomm regional dispatch to 433 Lower Hampden Road for the report of a structure fire. Enroute dispatch updated that there was a person with burn injuries and the possibility of other missing occupants. Chief Harris transmitted a second alarm and requested multiple ambulances to the scene. Monson Police arrived on scene and located an occupant with third degree burns to over forty percent of their body near the fire building and dragged that person to safety. Chief Harris arrived on-scene established command and reported a large three-story building with heavy fire conditions on side B that included two 120-gallon propane tanks venting and on fire with fire conditions extending into division two. During the initial 360/size up command discovered an injured occupant in a 1st floor apartment looking for animals. This person was removed from the building and escorted to a safe location. The first arriving engine with only two personnel knocked down much of the exterior fire while mutual aid companies that arrived shortly after were assigned to a search and establish a water supply from a pond on the property and a stream a few hundred feet from the fire scene. Additional resources as they arrived were assigned to fire attack and RIC. Ultimately crews had to be removed from the 1800’s building due to rapid fire spread and a ladder pipe was put into operation to bring the fire under control. Crews re-entered the structure to overhaul and put out hot spots. In all two occupants were transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries and two firefighters were transported for heat related injuries. At the time of the fire temps where around 95 degrees Rehab services were provided by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and Rehab 78 out of Charlton MA. In all the fire went to 5 alarms and over 50 firefighters were on scene at the height of the incident.
