High School Explorers Gain Hands-On Experience at Bergen FD

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

The Bergen Fire Department (FD) recently spent an afternoon working with members of its Fire Explorer program, after many new students joined the department in recent months. Many of the Explorers are still in high school, juggling sports, homework, and other responsibilities, but they continue to spend time at the firehouse learning the fundamentals of the fire service.

As the group grew, the training centered on essential skills that every fireman must learn. Members, led by one of the program's senior Explorers, went over the department's apparatus and tools compartment by compartment. The group learnt what each tool is used for, why it is carried, and how to utilize it on the fireground. Explorers also reviewed proper care and cleaning techniques for hand lines. Department members say building these habits early helps prepare the next generation of firefighters for safe and effective service.
