March 13, 2026 — The Trout Creek Fire Department is reminding residents that the New York State annual burn ban will take effect from March 16 through May 14, 2026, a seasonal restriction aimed at reducing the risk of wildfires during the dry spring months.
During this period, the burning of lawn debris, grass and leaves, tree limbs, and building materials is prohibited across the state. Officials note that vegetation is often extremely dry after the winter months, and the combination of dry fuels and strong spring winds can quickly turn even a small debris fire into a rapidly spreading wildfire.
While debris burning is not permitted, small recreational campfires and cooking fires are still allowed, provided they use charcoal or clean, untreated wood and are always attended by a responsible adult.
Fire officials stress that open burning during spring cleanup is one of the leading causes of wildfires each year. Residents are encouraged to wait until the burn ban is lifted on May 14 before disposing of yard debris by burning.
The Trout Creek Fire Department asks the community to follow the state regulations and fire safety guidelines to help protect homes, forests, and local emergency responders.
