March 7, 2026 — Firefighters and community members gathered for an afternoon of friendly competition and support during a charity basketball game benefiting a fellow first responder currently battling cancer.

Members of the Walton/Trout Creek Fire Department faced off against the Delhi/Bloomville Fire Department in a spirited matchup that ended with Delhi/Bloomville taking the win with a final score of 47–42. The game brought together firefighters of all ages who laced up their sneakers for a cause much bigger than the scoreboard.

The fundraiser was organized in support of Joe Mallaber, a fellow first responder who is currently undergoing aggressive treatment for cancer. While players competed on the court, other volunteers, spouses, and supporters worked behind the scenes selling 50/50 tickets and organizing a basket raffle to raise funds.

The event also received help from neighboring departments, with the East Meredith Fire Department generously running the food concession stand and donating all proceeds to support Joe.

Although the game featured plenty of laughs, fouls, and some time spent on the floor, the event ultimately showcased the strong sense of brotherhood and community that exists among emergency service members. Organizers noted it was a great way for departments and supporters to come together for an important cause.
