March 7, 2026 — The Tiverton Fire Department is reminding residents to use the upcoming daylight saving time change as an opportunity to check the safety devices in their homes. In coordination with recommendations from the National Fire Protection Association, officials encourage homeowners to move their clocks forward on March 8 and take a few minutes to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms throughout their homes. Fire safety experts recommend testing alarms monthly using the test button, replacing batteries in traditional alarms at least once a year, and ensuring alarms are installed on every level of the home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Additionally, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years, including hardwired units, to ensure they continue functioning properly. Fire officials stress that working alarms provide early warning during fires or carbon monoxide emergencies and can make a life-saving difference for families.
