February 28, 2026 — The Tiverton Fire Department is encouraging residents to help improve emergency access during the winter months by clearing snow from fire hydrants throughout the community. As part of a public safety initiative, the department announced a hydrant-shoveling contest inviting residents to clear a three-foot area around hydrants and shovel a path to the street to ensure they remain visible and accessible during emergencies. Participants are asked to take a photo of the cleared hydrant and post it in the comments of the department’s announcement for a chance to win one of three $50 Amazon gift cards. Fire officials noted that hydrants buried under snow can slow firefighting operations, making community assistance an important part of winter preparedness. Winners of the contest will be selected and announced on March 6, 2026, at noon, with officials reminding residents that even a few minutes of shoveling can make a life-saving difference during an emergency.
