Eastport, NY - Joe Petit’s dedication to the fire service is deeply rooted in both family tradition and a lifelong commitment to helping others. His journey began in 2005 when he joined the Flanders Fire Department. Through hard work and leadership, he rose through the ranks and, in 2009, became a lieutenant. Over time, he continued advancing until he ultimately served as Chief of the Flanders Fire Department.
In 2020, Joe returned to Eastport, where he served as a captain for three years. His decision to continue serving was not just about the job—it was about family history. Joe’s father had once served as Chief of the Eastport Fire Department, and that legacy played a major role in shaping his path.
When Joe first moved to Flanders, he recognized a strong need for firefighters in the community. Once he joined, he quickly developed a deep appreciation for the work. The opportunity to help people and be part of something bigger than himself solidified his passion for the fire service. For Joe, firefighting is more than a responsibility—it is a calling that runs in his roots.
What keeps him involved is the unique nature of the job. Joe believes every call brings something meaningful, whether it’s the experience gained, the people helped, or the teamwork shared among members. Rather than a single defining moment, it is the collection of experiences that makes the service memorable.
Returning to Eastport also rekindled something special for him—the camaraderie. Reconnecting with people he had known for years reminded him that the fire department is more than just an organization; it is a brotherhood and sisterhood built on trust, service, and community.
As part of this series, the Eastport Fire Department has been asking its members why they joined and what keeps them committed. The department has a strong connection to the Eastport community, and many members believe there is something truly special about the town. That sense of belonging motivates them to respond to every call.
Joe Petit’s story reflects that dedication. Having served as both a member and Chief of the Flanders Fire Department, and holding multiple positions within the Eastport Fire Department, his experience highlights the deep bond between firefighters and their community.
Over the coming months, the department will continue sharing more members’ stories. These reflections not only bring back meaningful memories but also strengthen the bond among members and hopefully inspire others to join the Eastport Fire Department and become part of its proud tradition of service.
