January 22nd — Vernon, VT — The Vernon, VT Fire Department honored two members for their devotion and commitment while taking the Vermont Fire Academy's Firefighter I certification course.

Firefighter J. Unruh finished the program and is now a trained interior firefighter, having received training in fireground operations and hazardous chemicals at the awareness and operational levels. The training required months of evening and weekend classes commencing in September 2025.

Firefighter S. Krafchuk also finished the most of the training, although she sustained a significant elbow injury during a live burn session in December. Officials said she intends to complete the written and practical components once she has recovered.
