In October, the Fairview Fire Prevention Bureau and the Fairview Fire Department sponsored their 15th annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest. This year's theme, “Charge into Fire Safety-Lithium-ion Batteries in the Home.”

This has been a labor-of-love project for Fire Inspector Pat Buglione for all 15-years. The project is an annual success with help from Fire Chief and Fire Official Dennis Licameli, Senior Battalion Chief John Migliaccio and Fire Inspector Kristian Vera.

The contest is open to all 3rd grade students in the Borough. Grand prize winners received a class trophy and a pizza luncheon at their schools with firefighters. Their biggest enjoyment was the prize of riding through town in Squad 1's brand new Spartan rescue-pumper.

For Public School No. 3, the first place winning poster was submitted by Ms. Kim's class. The students are Escarleth Bellon Mazat, Geraline MacKorty, Yohisy Calan Curruchich and Emely E. Estrada.

At Our Lady of Grace, the first place winning poster was submitted by Ms. Sacchiero's 3rd grade student, Nathan Trabado.

To top it all off, students, parents and teachers were honored with a dinner and, of course, ice cream, at La Fortuna restaurant, where the winning trophies were presented. The proud parents took photos of the students with their trophies as well as photos of the posters that were on display.

Borough Council members Florencia Asto and Kenneth Schmitt attended the event along with Borough Clerk Monique Berisha. In addition, Fr. Peter Sticco, the Fire Department Chaplain and Pastor of Our Lady of Grace RC Church was in attendance.

At the restaurant, each table contained fire prevention bureau pens and pads. As the event was coming to a close, and students and parents were leaving, they approached the fire department table and asked the fire officials for their autograph, using their new pads. The firefighters are third grade heroes.
