DOWNS: Thick plumes of smoke rose into the sky from a fire that involved a building under construction on Oceanport av. in Oceanport, Aug, 25th. Witnesses said they saw the fire start in the back of the building, and the flames spread onto the roof, according to the Little Silver Oceanport Patch.
UPS: Arriving Asbury Park police officers observed heavy smoke and fire coming from a Prospect av. dwelling on Aug. 25th. An 8-year-old child emerged from a second-floor window, jumped, and was caught by two police officers and a Good Samaritan. They worked together to safely bring the child to the ground. Police Officers De Witt Bacon, John Walsh and neighbor Joseph Dunbar stood under the boy's window and caught him as he jumped to safety, according to a Daily Dispatch report. The boy was treated for smoke inhalation.
DOWNS: On Aug. 26th, a 72-year-old man was killed and two others injured when a SUV crashed through a Planet Fitness business in Elizabeth. According to the Daily Voice, the man, who was near the front window, was killed. Three other people were injured. The driver of the vehicle suffered injuries consistent with airbag deployment,
UPS: Newly appointed firefighters in Hoboken are Kurtis Rivera, Christian Rosso, David Walker and Christopher Willis.
DOWNS: A fire broke out in the rear of a multi-million-dollar home on Tobago Lane in Ocean City, Aug. 27th. There were no injuries, according to 6ABC.
UPS: Newly promoted battalion chiefs in Paterson are Michael Scherer and Ronald Bator. New captains are James Roy, Devin Mc Gowan, Joseph Lax and Kevin Behnke.
DOWNS: Unoccupied Hackensack police vehicles were involved in a “suspicious fire,” Aug. 30th. They were parked in an overflow parking area for police cars on Trinity Place. The fire appeared to be suspicious, according to Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Deputy Chief of Detectives Jeff Angermeyer, and it is under investigation.
UPS: In early September, a 78-year-old man was arrested on arson charges, accusing him of setting multiple police vehicles on fire in a city parking lot, Aug. 30th. He was charged with aggravated arson, among other criminal mischief charges, according to NorthJersey.com.
DOWNS: Flames consumed a Point View Parkway dwelling in Wayne on Sept. 2nd. No one was home at the time of the fire, according to News 12.
UPS: In Vineland, Chris Cooke has been promoted to fire captain. Jeff Brinberg is the new lieutenant.
DOWNS: Three dwellings were involved in fire on Gasko Rd. in Hamilton Township (Atlantic County) on Sept. 1st. Two of the homes appeared to be a total loss, according to a 10 Philadelphia news report.
UPS: Newly promoted fire captains in Jersey City are: Frank Petrangeli, Justin Del Piano, Scott Taylor, Christopher Mohin, Thomas Mc Farlane, Jeffrey Piorkowski, Eric Greenemeier and Daniel Pepe.
DOWNS: A fire in a mobile home on West 6th St. in Moonachie, Sept. 8th, left one man dead. Responding police and firefighters found a man inside the home, according to NorthJersey.com. He was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the fire, authorities said.
UPS: Newly appointed firefighters in Vineland are: Hayden Smallwood, Ryan Devenny, Nick Lacovara, Will Tillis and Jack Cell.
DOWNS: A 2-alarm fire involved the Sergeant Scrap Metal yard Corp. in Gloucester City along Route 130, on the morning of Sept. 6th, according to WEPVI-TV.
UPS: Lord Abbett has donated new rope and related equipment to the Jersey City Fire Foundation. The equipment will be assigned to Rescue Co. 1 and Squad Co. 4. Jersey City currently has 22 buildings over 500-feet tall and ranks 8th in the US for high rise buildings. These structures present challenges with window washers, scaffolds and vertical shafts.
DOWNS: At least 45 people were reported homeless as the result of an early-morning fire that involved three Elm St. dwellings in Paterson, Sept. 12th. The Red Cross was assisting the residents, according to WABC-TV.
UPS: In North Hudson, Jeffrey DiPaolo has been promoted to deputy fire chief. Christopher Larkin is the new battalion chief and Robert Torres, Jr. rose to captain.
