A public safety alert about the responsible use of portable generators was distributed by Marshalls Creek Fire Company. Because of the possibility of carbon monoxide exposure, fire officials advised against using generators indoors or in confined or poorly ventilated spaces.

Generators should be used outside, at least 20 feet from residences, and away from windows, doors, and vents, residents are advised. Before refilling, generators should be shut off and allowed to cool. They should also not be utilized in damp or rainy weather. Additionally, fire authorities advise keeping a fire extinguisher close by and making sure residences have functional carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
