December 26, 2025 — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the implementation of Tier 3 weather-related vehicle travel restrictions across large portions of the state due to hazardous winter weather conditions.
According to PennDOT, the first phase of restrictions took effect at 10:00 a.m. on December 26, impacting Interstate 81 south of Interstate 83, as well as all Pennsylvania interstates west of I-81. This includes the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76 and I-70) and all western Turnpike extensions.
A second phase of Tier 3 restrictions is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., expanding coverage to Interstate 81 north of I-83, Route 33 in its entirety, U.S. Route 22 between I-78 and Route 33, and all Pennsylvania interstates east of I-81, including the eastern Pennsylvania Turnpike extensions.
Under Tier 3 restrictions, speed limits may be reduced on affected roadways, commercial vehicles may be restricted to the right lane only, and certain vehicle types—including loaded commercial trucks, tandem vehicles, buses, RVs, and oversize loads—may be prohibited from travel unless equipped with required safety equipment such as chains.
Hanover Township Fire Department urges motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, comply with posted restrictions, and monitor road conditions throughout the day. Drivers are encouraged to visit 511pa.com for the latest updates on roadway conditions and travel advisories.
Officials emphasize that these measures are intended to reduce accidents, keep roadways clear for emergency responders, and protect public safety during the ongoing winter weather event.
