December 7, 2025 — After more than a year of research and planning, the Westbrookville Volunteer Fire Company #1 has completed a major project to improve access to water sources for firefighting operations within its district.

Department chiefs identified rural water supply as a critical need and selected a bridge-mounted dry hydrant system designed by GBW Associates LLC. Following site evaluations, two county bridges were chosen: the intersection of Pine Kill Road and David Rhodes Road, and the Haven Road bridge, which serves both the Westbrookville and Wurtsboro fire districts.

Funding for the project was approved unanimously by the Town of Mamakating Town Board after a public presentation and discussion. Support was also provided by the Wurtsboro Fire District, Sullivan County Department of Public Works, and local officials to ensure proper permitting and installation.

Installation began in October, with final setup and flow testing completed this week. Both sites successfully delivered more than 1,000 gallons per minute and feature systems that store neatly along bridge railings when not in use.

Westbrookville Fire officials thanked Town of Mamakating Supervisor Mike Robbins, Highway Superintendent Morrow, the Town Board, Sullivan County DPW, and GBW Associates for their cooperation and support, noting the project significantly enhances fire protection and community safety.
