Two Chicago firefighters pay the ultimate price

Chicago, IL. Two firefighters paid the ultimate price at a fire in an abandoned commercial building in Chicago. According to a report released by the United States Fire Administration, four additional firemen are in critical condition and ten are in stable condition in area hospitals.

A line of duty death notification was released for Firefighter Edward Stringer. He had twelve years of service with the department. A second line of duty notification was released for Firefighter Corey Ankum, age 34. Ankum had been with the department for two years.

While working at fire at 1744 East 75th Street, a vacant commercial building, sixteen firefighters became trapped and were injured after the roof of the building collapsed. Firefighters Stringer and Ankum had been on the roof when it collapsed. Both passed away from injuries sustained at the scene.
