Vacant Factory Collapses in High Winds

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

On Friday, December 19, 2025, as a strong storm with high winds and heavy rain swept the state, around 10:10 a.m., Bridgeport Engine 4 was dispatched to a report of wires down at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Gregory Street. Upon their arrival, Lt. Tom Varanelli and his crew encountered not only wires and a pole down, but also a large portion of a vacant factory, now collapsed and lying across Gregory Street, taking down the pole and wires. Lt. Varanelli established command and requested the response of Bridgeport PD and a battalion to respond to the scene. Battalion 2 and Safety Officer 1, freed up from an elevator rescue and responded to the scene. Members of fire and PD secured the area with tape and barriers. United Illuminating was requested to the scene for the live wires that were down and causing a hazard. Members stood by and monitored the scene while UI and city officials mitigated the damage and evaluated further risks. The collapsed building, built in 1910, as a part of the Warner Brothers Corset Company (Warnaco) complex, was in the process of being demolished by a contracted construction company; however, the workers were not actively working at the time of the collapse. Engine 3 also responded to the scene for an electrical pole fire at the other end of the block, which was quickly contained. All workers were accounted for, and there were no reported injuries.
