The Long Ridge Fire Company advises locals to adhere to fundamental home heating safety procedures when the weather drops. Space heaters should be placed at least three feet away from other objects. Power strips or extension cords should never be used when plugging heaters into wall outlets. Heaters should always be turned off before leaving the house or going to bed.

Ash that has cooled should be stored outside in a metal container, and fireplaces should be utilized with screens. It is recommended that residents inspect their carbon monoxide and smoke alarms on a regular basis and never heat their homes using ovens, stoves, or barbecues. A small amount of prudence goes a long way. As the cold weather persists, be warm and safe.
