November 16, 2025 — Citrus County Fire Rescue responded yesterday at 3:05 p.m. to a structure fire on W. Sunnycrest Lane in Homosassa, where crews quickly contained an electrical fire that damaged a single-story mobile home.
Rescue 51 arrived within minutes, reporting smoke coming from the front of the residence. Firefighters from Engine 3 (Homosassa) advanced a hose line into a converted bedroom where the fire originated, while Engine 20 (Pine Ridge) completed a primary search and confirmed all occupants were safely outside.
The fire was brought under control shortly after arrival, with damage limited to one room and part of an interior wall. Squad 7 (Connell Heights) assisted with overhaul and ventilation. Additional units from Kensington, Hernando, and the Highlands were canceled en route once the incident was contained.
A preliminary investigation determined the blaze was accidental, caused by a failure at a wall outlet powering both a space heater and a television. Due to electrical damage, WREC disconnected power to the home. No injuries were reported, and the homeowner declined Red Cross assistance. Property and content loss is estimated at $12,000.
Safety Reminder:
Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet—never into extension cords or power strips. Keep them at least three feet from anything that can burn, and routinely check outlets for heat or signs of damage. Electrical fires can ignite quickly and spread behind walls, making working smoke alarms essential for early detection.
