November 11, 2025 — Full Baldwin County Fire Rescue, in coordination with the Baldwin County Board of Commissioners, is urging residents to follow essential heating safety practices as colder weather arrives. The department emphasized the importance of maintaining a three-foot kid-free zone around all heating sources and keeping combustible items far from heaters, fireplaces, and similar equipment. Officials also warned against plugging space heaters into extension cords or power strips, stressing that they must be connected directly to wall outlets to prevent overload and reduce fire risk.
Firefighters noted that space heaters should always be turned off when a room is unattended or when household members go to sleep. Residents are also reminded never to use heaters to dry clothing and to routinely inspect equipment for signs of wear or damage. Baldwin County Fire Rescue further encouraged the community to check for recalled heating products through the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
For homes using fireplaces, the agency advised installing a sturdy screen to prevent embers from escaping into living areas. Ashes should be left to cool completely before being placed in a metal container and stored well away from the home. Fire officials also cautioned against burning materials such as treated lumber, wrapping paper, or discarded holiday decorations. To ensure safe operation, annual inspections and professional cleanings of chimneys and heating systems are strongly recommended.
