Nov. 19, 2025 — The Red Oak Volunteer Fire Department is urging drivers to stay alert and slow down around emergency scenes, emphasizing the growing danger responders face on roadways. According to officials, the leading cause of death for emergency personnel is being struck by a vehicle while working roadside, a risk underscored by journalist McKenzie Baker’s reporting.

National data shows that an average of 45 to 60 first responders are struck and killed each year while assisting motorists or managing incidents along highways. Department leaders stress that adhering to “Move Over” laws and practicing attentive driving can significantly reduce these tragedies and protect those who serve on the front lines.
