MASTIC, NY - On November 25th at about 9:00 P.M., the Mastic Fire Department was activated for a report of smoke in the area near the William Floyd High School. Lieutenant Tarren Kearns (5-12-70) was the first to respond to the call for assistance. Once in the area, he advised he had smoke in the area and was attempting to locate the source. After investigating for a period of time, the source of the smoke was located on Pineway Avenue, off Mastic Rd., in a commercial garage behind La Placita 2 Meat Market. Heavy smoke was coming from the commercial garage and Lieutenant Kearns advised Fire-Com that he would need his department activated for a general alarm for a structure fire.
Chief of Department Martucci arrived on scene and requested that Fire-Com reactivate the alarm and start mutual aid for an engine to the scene from Mastic Beach Fire Department. A short time later, he requested the working fire be transmitted to bring in additional mutual aid from Brookhaven and Center Moriches to the scene.
Firefighters made entry and found active fire in the building and the two lines that were stretched were put into operation to quickly put out the fire with the assistance of the Mastic Beach Fire Department. The Brookhaven Fire Department was cancelled, as was the engine from Center Moriches. Mastic Ambulance was on scene and no injuries were reported. As units were released, they responded to a second structure fire immediately after.
