November 19, 2025 — Alachua County Fire Rescue reported that crews gathered for one final workout with Lt. Bates at the iconic Ben Hill Griffin Stadium as he prepares to retire next week. The send-off honored his longstanding reputation within the department for promoting physical fitness and challenging his crew with a signature “Bates Bonus” round at the end of every workout.

According to ACFR, the morning served as both a celebration of camaraderie and a tribute to Bates’ leadership, dedication, and influence on department wellness and team culture. Members noted that the location was a fitting backdrop for a firefighter known for pushing himself — and others — to excel.

Alachua County Fire Rescue extended its appreciation to Lt. Bates and wished him the best as he begins the next chapter of his life.
