Boat Washes Ashore without operator

Mastic Beach N.Y.- On the evening of Sunday October 30th the Suffolk County 9-1-1 center received reports of a boat that came ashore at Smith Point Park with no occupants on board. The Suffolk County Park Rangers, Suffolk Police 7th Precinct, Suffolk Police Marine Bureau and Mastic Beach FD were all dispatched to the event. Upon investigation it was found that the keys were still on the boat along with some the owners’ personal effects. Firefighters and police began investigating and searching the shoreline as well as the waters. It was determined the own did not return to his vehicle at the marina he launched from.
Firefighters from the marine incident task force which includes Mastic Beach, Mastic, Center Moriches , East Moriches and Eastport FD’s responded with several fire boats to assist Suffolk Police Marine Bureau and coast guard boats and helicopters in searching the water for the man. EMS resources were also activated to stand by at the command post. After searching in rough seas firefighters were unable to locate the boats operator and the scene was turned over to the US Coast Guard. The Coast Guard deployed several resources including a cutter which came in the next day and did an extensive search before operations were suspended. The person has yet to be recovered.
