MASTIC BEACH, NY - On the evening of Sunday, October 30th, the Suffolk County 9-1-1 center received reports of a boat that came ashore at Smith Point Park with no occupants on board.

The Suffolk County Park Rangers, along with Suffolk Police 7th Precinct, Suffolk Police Marine Bureau and Mastic Beach FD were all dispatched to the incident. Upon investigation it was found that the keys were still in the boat, along with some of the owner's personal items. Firefighters and police began investigating and searching the shoreline, as well as the waters. It was determined the owner did not return to his vehicle at the marina he launched from.

Firefighters from the marine incident task force, which includes Mastic Beach, Mastic, Center Moriches, East Moriches and Eastport FDs, responded with several fire boats to assist Suffolk Police Marine Bureau and coast guard boats and helicopters in searching the water for the man. EMS resources were also activated to stand by at the command post.

After searching in rough seas, firefighters were unable to locate the boat's operator and the scene was turned over to the US Coast Guard. The person has yet to be recovered.
