Parkesburg, Pa. — October 29 —At 5:13 p.m., the Keystone Valley Fire Department and other mutual-aid companies were summoned to the West Sadsbury Commons Shopping Center for a reported structure fire after a GameStop customer noticed gray smoke and an odor coming from the ceiling.
Chester County 911 transmitted the information as units responded. Lancaster Assistant Chief 42 (Slaymaker) came first, found nothing from the Alpha side, and took command. Ladders 8 and 41 were sent to the front and back of the building to access the roof and inspect the HVAC equipment. Crews discovered a malfunctioning HVAC unit; therefore, the assignment was reduced to units on the scene.
Ventilation was built up to evacuate smoke from the store, and the situation was quickly brought under control. When conditions improved and the building was deemed safe, management reclaimed control of the facility. At 5:46 p.m., all units had cleared the situation. The Fire Marshal was requested to follow up, and Keystone Valley EMS stood by during the response.
