Penobscot, Maine — October 20 — A dry hydrant water supply on Dunbar Road was cleared and reopened by nine Penobscot Volunteer Fire Department members. Fire equipment had limited access due to the overgrown pathway. To make sure the dry hydrant is functional for future use, crews cleared away vegetation, reopened the approach, and flushed and inspected it.
Dry hydrants are an important part of rural water supply operations, providing a reliable drafting point when no public hydrant system is available. The department encourages residents who have a pond or accessible water source on their property to contact their local fire department to discuss whether it may serve as a potential water supply point.
