The Mason Fire/EMS Department announced that state regulations regarding open burning have been updated, and residents are urged to review the revised requirements before clearing or burning yard waste. The updated rules aim to reduce air pollution and mitigate the risk of uncontrolled fires, making it necessary for property owners to ensure they still qualify under the new criteria.

Under the changes, only natural vegetation such as leaves, branches and yard trimmings may be burned, and—in most areas—these materials must originate on the same property. Burning treated wood, plastics, rubber, or household trash continues to be strictly prohibited. Permitted land-clearing burns may still occur but now often require new conditions such as minimum distances from occupied structures and limitations on transport and frequency of debris disposal.

Residents are advised to contact the Mason Fire/EMS Department for local applicability and confirm eligibility. The department notes these changes are effective as of 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, October 9, 2025 for lifts of prior restrictions in certain jurisdictions. masoncountywa.gov Noncompliance can lead to fines or enforcement action, and temporary bans may be imposed during dry or windy periods. Staying informed, acting safely, and verifying current restrictions are key to responsible disposal.
