Vernon Center Fire Department Expresses Disappointment Over Sentencing in Theft Case
October 28, 2025 — The Vernon Center Fire Department has issued a public statement expressing deep dissatisfaction with the recent sentencing decision by the Oneida County Court regarding former department treasurer Jonnell Rose.
Rose, who embezzled $309,611.58 from the department, received a 1–3 year prison sentence — a punishment the department says does not reflect the severity of the crime. The Oneida County District Attorney’s Office had recommended a 4–12 year sentence, but the final decision was determined by the presiding judge.
Chief Tony Doty delivered and submitted a victim impact statement during the proceedings, emphasizing the financial and emotional toll the theft has taken on the department and its members.
While the department received the maximum insurance payout of $150,000, leaders expressed skepticism that full restitution will ever be made.
Despite the setback, the Vernon Center Fire Department reaffirmed its commitment to serving the community, stating:
“We want the public to know that we remain dedicated to responding to any emergency and providing the best service and care possible — just as we have since our founding in 1980.”
