— October 4 — While many residents were asleep, Fort Ann Volunteer Fire Company members stayed ready for overnight emergency calls.
The department’s report states that Rescue Tanker 264 and a crew were dispatched at about 4:17 a.m. to assist with a structure fire assignment in Granville, New York. Crew members set up a fill location on Baker Road to assist with fireground water supply operations.
Fort Ann also maintained an interior engine crew at its station. The crew stood by to supply extra manpower if required or to handle another call, while other members were tied to the fire assignment.
The overnight response came as Fire Prevention Week began on October 4. The 2026 campaign, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” highlights safe charging practices and the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.
Fire and rescue personnel can use the week to remind residents that routine checks at home can help prevent fires and improve escape planning. Safety reminders include testing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, following manufacturer guidance for alarm batteries, keeping combustibles away from heating equipment, and arranging regular chimney inspections and cleanings.
Residents are also encouraged to charge devices on hard, stable surfaces rather than beds or couches, and to avoid charging damaged batteries or devices. Everyone in the household should know two ways out of each room and have an agreed-upon meeting place outside.
For emergency services personnel, the overnight assignment also highlights the value of maintaining coverage while crews are committed to a working incident. Keeping a staffed crew available can help preserve response capability for additional calls.
Fire prevention starts at home. Checking alarms, identifying hazards and reviewing an escape plan are simple steps residents can take to help protect their households.
