Endicott, NY - Rapid intervention by the Endicott Fire Department prevented a serious commercial structure fire Thursday after an improperly discarded cigarette ignited construction debris inside a large dumpster, sending flames fifteen feet into the air.
Career personnel assigned to Platoon 1 were dispatched on Thursday, October 29, 2026, for a reported exterior fire behind a building. Operating units arrived within minutes to encounter an active, advanced fire consuming a large roll-off container heavily packed with construction and remodeling debris, with heavy fire conditions impinging near the exterior of the adjacent structure.
Crews deployed a handline immediately to establish exposure protection and initiate a direct attack on the burning material. Firefighters successfully knocked down the intense blaze and saturated the container contents before radiant heat or direct flame contact could extend into the exposed building.
An investigation determined that the fire was sparked by a carelessly discarded cigarette dropped into the construction materials.
Department officials issued a strong public reminder urging the community to fully extinguish all smoking materials in proper receptacles, emphasizing that a single moment of carelessness with smoking items can quickly escalate into a catastrophic building fire.
