October 13, 2025 - On Monday afternoon at approximately 1:35 p.m., the Watch Hill Fire Department responded on automatic aid alongside the Stonington Borough Fire Department and the Pawcatuck Fire Department to assist a male windsurfer in distress near Sandy Point. The response was initiated by a 9-1-1 call from a concerned Stonington resident, prompting a swift and coordinated rescue effort.
The windsurfer was found just off the Folly of Sandy Point after struggling for over an hour against strong winds and currents caused by the weekend’s nor’easter. He had been unable to return to shore or climb back onto his board.
Stonington Borough Fire Chief Jeff Hoadley assumed command of the incident, with Assistant Chiefs from the Watch Hill and Pawcatuck Fire Departments working together to coordinate multiple assets under a unified command structure.
Crews from Watch Hill Marine 10, the Stonington Police boat, and Pawcatuck Marine 2 successfully located the individual and brought him aboard the Watch Hill vessel. He was transported to shore, evaluated by Westerly Ambulance personnel, and later taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The U.S. Coast Guard was also notified of the incident.
This successful rescue highlighted the efficiency and cooperation of all responding agencies, showcasing the strength of mutual aid partnerships and the dedication of first responders—for the second time on a holiday Monday.
Officials reminded the public to always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and to file a float plan with a friend or family member before heading out on the water.
