At approximately 15:47 hours on October 28, 2025, the Ayer Fire Department, in coordination with the Ayer Police Department, responded to 37 Groton School Road following reports of fire alarms sounding and smoke visible from the building.

Upon arrival, the Fire Chief observed smoke coming from first-floor windows on the “C” side of the structure and immediately requested a first alarm assignment. This response brought all five of Ayer’s fire apparatus—Engine 2, Engine 4, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, and Ambulance 2—to the scene. Mutual aid engines from Devens and Groton also responded, while a Shirley engine provided station coverage.

Firefighters quickly stretched a hose line and contained the fire to the apartment of origin, preventing further spread. The building owner is assisting displaced residents in securing temporary housing for the night.

The incident was jointly investigated by Ayer fire crews and investigators from the Massachusetts Fire Marshal’s Office. All units cleared the scene by 17:41 hours.

At the time of the incident, two members of the shift were assisting in Groton aboard Medic 1 for an ALS intercept with the Groton ambulance.

The simultaneous nature of these emergencies highlights the importance of maintaining adequate staffing levels in the community, particularly in light of the staffing challenges following the closure of Nashoba Valley Medical Center.

The Ayer Fire Department extended its gratitude to its mutual aid partners for their support:
