BENTON, October 25, 2025 — The Benton Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its founding members, George H. Newcomb, who dedicated more than 70 years to serving the community.
Before the department’s official formation in 1954, George and a small group of local residents banded together to create what would become the Benton Volunteer Fire Department. He remained active through the decades, assisting at raffles, attending monthly meetings and truck checks, and frequently stopping by the station simply because “the doors were open.”
George was the department’s last remaining charter member, remembered not only for his service but for his enduring presence and commitment to his fellow firefighters.
“Thank you, George, for your everlasting service and dedication,” the department said in a statement, extending gratitude to his family for sharing his time and devotion with the Benton community.
