Head-On Collision on Route 2 Near Exit 70 Sends One to Hospital
Orange, MA - At approximately 3:29 a.m. on October 18, 2025, Engine 2 and Ambulance 1, staffed by the duty crew and on-call personnel, responded to a reported motor vehicle accident on Route 2 in the area of Exit 70. While en route, Shelburne Control updated responding units that the incident involved a head-on collision. Engine 3 and Ambulance 2 were then dispatched to assist.
Upon arrival, crews found two vehicles located a significant distance apart with a large debris field spanning the roadway. Massachusetts State Police closed the highway as emergency personnel managed two separate scene locations. One driver was found trapped inside a vehicle and was extricated using hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life). The patient was transported to Leominster Hospital by Ambulance 1.
The second driver was evaluated on scene by Ambulance 2 but declined transport. Both vehicles were removed by Dale’s Auto, and the highway was reopened within the hour. During this incident, Athol Fire Department covered a medical call in the Town of New Salem.
