Canton, CT - Firefighters from the Town of Canton Fire & EMS Department contained a commercial dumpster fire Thursday evening behind the historic Valley House, keeping the flames from threatening nearby structures.

Emergency units were initially dispatched on the evening of Thursday, October 22, 2026, following reports of active fire originating in a refuse container positioned directly behind the property. Due to the potential risk of rapid extension to adjacent commercial walls and exterior storage areas, dispatchers initially mobilized a multi-apparatus response comprising Engine 1, Engine 3, Engine 4, and Utility 9.

Upon arrival and immediate size-up of the fireground, incident commanders determined the blaze was strictly confined to the contents of the metal receptacle and posed no immediate threat to surrounding buildings. Responding officers quickly downgraded the assignment, canceling the incoming secondary apparatus and directing the crew of Engine 3 to handle the fire single-handedly.

The personnel from Engine 3 deployed an attack line to douse the burning debris, thoroughly soaking the interior contents and overhauling the smoldering materials to prevent rekindling. The scene was rendered safe and cleared without injuries or damage to surrounding properties.
