October 17, 2025 - Exeter Township Fire Department crews were dispatched to assist the Cumru Township Fire Department following a serious accident on the westbound Rt. 422 bypass. Reports indicated that a vehicle had struck the center median, left the roadway near the third Schuylkill River bridge, and caught fire along the riverbank.
Upon arrival, Chief 25 confirmed the report and directed Rescue-Engine 25 to deploy a handline from the top of the bridge to combat the blaze. Captain 42 soon arrived on the scene and assumed command. As crews sought the best access point to the area beneath the bridge, Exeter firefighters descended a steep embankment at the start of the bridge and lowered a handline over the side to help control the fire.
Due to the challenging terrain and limited access to the patient, Tower 25 and Ladder 64 were requested to conduct a high-angle stokes basket rescue. Working together, crews established a hauling system to lift the victim safely to the roadway above, where EMS personnel provided medical care.
More than 20 Exeter firefighters responded to the incident with multiple units, including Rescue-Engine 25, Engine-Tanker 25, Tower 25, Marine 25, Utility 25, and Brush 25, which remained on standby.
