Binghamton, NY - An aggressive initial knockdown by Binghamton firefighters confined a heavy working fire to the rear of a residential structure Wednesday evening, stopping the flames from consuming adjacent buildings.
First-arriving fire companies responded to 38 Doubleday Street on Wednesday evening, October 21, 2026, encountering heavy, active fire concentrated at the rear of the property that was rapidly extending upward into the second floor and attic spaces. Crews initiated a fast attack by stretching a pre-connected handline directly to the seat of the fire, mounting an immediate suppression effort to stem the upward growth.
Subsequent apparatus secured positive water supplies from hydrants, deployed a Rapid Intervention Team for firefighter safety, designated an incident safety officer, and conducted primary and secondary search sweeps across the structure. Firefighters confirmed that all occupants had evacuated the home before emergency units arrived on scene, resulting in zero reported civilian injuries.
Due to the quick water application, the main body of fire was held to the rear and upper exterior areas of the building, preventing any thermal damage or extension to nearby exposed structures.
The Binghamton Fire Department was supported on scene by the Binghamton Police Department, Superior Ambulance, Broome County Emergency Services 911 dispatchers, and utility crews from NYSEG. The origin and cause of the blaze remain under official investigation.
