Binghamton, NY - Firefighters from the Binghamton Fire Department quickly contained an appliance fire inside a downtown commercial occupancy Thursday morning after a bystander noticed smoke venting from the building's chimney.
Emergency units assigned to Group C were dispatched at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2026, following a 911 report of a possible structure fire at 178 State Street. Arriving crews observed smoke actively showing from an exhaust chimney at the rear of the commercial property and made rapid entry into the building to investigate the source.
Once inside, interior crews located an active fire originating within a commercial coffee roaster. Firefighters extinguished the fire before it could extend into the building's structural components, subsequently dismantling and carrying the damaged, heated roaster components outside to eliminate lingering ignition sources.
Personnel conducted positive pressure ventilation to clear the commercial space of residual smoke and performed a detailed inspection of the entire exhaust flue and roof line to confirm the fire had not traveled upward through the chimney structure.
Department officials credited an attentive bystander for promptly contacting 911, emphasizing that rapid emergency reporting is vital to intercepting mechanical fires before they transition into full-scale structural blazes.
