Walton, NY - An aggressive suppression effort involving approximately 50 regional firefighters halted a fast-moving structure fire at the Mountain View Estates apartment complex Tuesday afternoon, containing the blaze to two heavily compromised units while saving ten household pets.
Emergency crews from Walton Fire and EMS were dispatched shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, following 911 reports of heavy smoke visible across the village and possible occupants entrapped inside the multi-family development. The initial apparatus went en route within nine minutes, arriving on the fireground 11 minutes post-dispatch to find heavy fire blowing through the roof and rear elevations of apartments 3 and 4 in Building “B.”
Firefighters confirmed shortly after arrival that all human occupants had successfully evacuated the burning complex. Two residents were subsequently transported to medical facilities by private vehicle for clinical evaluation and treatment. During interior search operations, crews rescued an entire family of ten dogs—a litter of eight puppies alongside both parents—though responders noted that at least three cats tragically perished in the fire.
Crews battled intense heat and active fire to prevent flames from extending into the remaining six apartments in the complex's "B" wing. Two units were deemed total losses, two suffered extensive heat and water damage, and four additional apartments sustained heavy smoke damage. The American Red Cross was dispatched to assist displaced tenants with temporary shelter and emergency relief services.
Utility crews from NYSEG responded rapidly to isolate municipal natural gas and electricity to the entire building, while the Walton Department of Public Works shut down water mains due to compromised domestic supply lines. Firefighting personnel received extensive mutual aid support from Trout Creek, Delhi, Downsville, Hancock, and Franklin fire companies, supported by Delaware County EMS, county coordinators, and the Walton Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Crews completed overhaul operations and cleared the scene by approximately 7:00 p.m. as Delaware County Fire Investigators initiated an origin-and-cause investigation.
