Cumberland, ME - One motorist was hospitalized and emergency personnel narrowly escaped injury Saturday morning following a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Gray Road and Skillin Road, an incident compounded by inattentive drivers encroaching on the active emergency zone.

Emergency responders from the Cumberland Fire Department and the Cumberland Police Department were dispatched to the intersection at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, for a three-car crash involving airbag deployment, injuries, and reported entrapment.

Frontline units Engine 105, Heavy Rescue 103, and Ambulance 104 responded to the scene, while an initial mutual aid request for an additional ambulance from Gray Fire Rescue was stood down after crews completed initial patient assessments.

First responders stabilized the wreckage, provided rapid emergency medical evaluations, mitigated battery and fuel hazards, and packaged one injured occupant for ambulance transport to an area hospital.

Gray Road (Route 100) was fully shut down for roughly 30 minutes to facilitate patient care and vehicle recovery by Copp Motors before alternating single-lane traffic was restored.

During roadside operations, multiple firefighters were nearly struck by passing motorists who disregarded illuminated safety apparatus, drove directly over reflective traffic cones, and ignored hand signals from crew members wearing high-visibility gear.

Department officials issued a strong public warning urging Cumberland County drivers to exercise extreme caution and drastically slow down when approaching active highway incidents, while the Cumberland Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the initial crash.
