Basement fires can present challenges for firefighters because crews may have limited access, reduced visibility, and heat or smoke moving through stairways into other parts of a building. Fireground operations depend on conditions at the scene and the incident commander’s direction.
Following the response, residents were reminded to check their home smoke alarms. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends installing alarms on every level, including the basement, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas. Alarms should be tested monthly and replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Many smoke alarms need replacement 10 years after manufacture .U.S. Fire Administration guidance.
