TOWN OF DEERPARK, NY – A swift high-angle rescue response saved a 65-year-old Town of Deerpark resident who had intentionally jumped from the tall cliff wall above the Delaware River this month.

High angle responders and rope rescue teams from Orange County and Sullivan Counties (NY) and Pike County, PA were able to deploy their specialized equipment and trained emergency crews to secure and transport the victim to a waiting ambulance.

The incident was reported by individuals who had stopped to take photos of the fall foliage along the winding Hawks Nest area of the Town of Deerpark, just after 1 p.m. on October 15 and heard the victim’s voice below.

The rescued individual was secured and lifted by high angle rope rescue members of Orange County’s Technical Rescue team and additional emergency fire and rescue crews. DEC rangers, NYS police, Town of Deerpark Police, and Port Jervis Ambulance Corps EMTs were among other emergency responders on scene. Boats were also stationed along the river in case the victim required lowering from the cliff for river rescue, rather than lifting above the wall.

The male subject was taken to Garnet Hospital for treatment. Further information about his condition was not immediately known.
