WESTFALL, PA – A female swimmer lost her life in the Delaware River last month as she and a companion were enjoying an end-of-summer afternoon in the river on September 3. The victim’s body was recovered from the Pennsylvania side of the river after a caller reported spotting a person floating in the water. It was reported by the caller that the victim was believed to be wearing a life jacket, and was noticed just before 12:30 p.m.
Police were able to confirm that the 58-year-old female had been swimming with a second individual, a male. While the male made it safely from the Westfall, PA boat launch river entrance to West End Beach in Port Jervis, NY, the female victim was still near the PA side when she was recovered.
The victim was reported by police to have been a Port Jervis resident or visiting for the summer, and unlike had initially been thought her life jacket was not on her, but floating near her when she was recovered.
Port Jervis, Huguenot, and Sparrowbush (NY) and Westfall and Matamoras (PA) water rescue teams assisted in the recovery, as well as police and EMS units on scene from Orange and Pike Counties.
